Joint work aims to rescue the history of navigation in Chile and the operation of the port-logistics system of the country through “El Contenedor Trotamundos”.

Santiago, August 18, 2016. With the signing of an agreement between the “Corporación Patrimonio Marítimo de Chile”, “Museo Marítimo Nacional” and SAAM, the alliance was formalized to strengthen maritime consciousness, the historical importance of the sea in the development of port-cities, and to highlight the perspectives opened by the sea for the future, at economic, technological, political and cultural levels.

Through “El Contenedor Trotamundos” the community will be introduced to the history of navigation, ports, and the current operation of the country’s port-logistics system. This educational presentation, that will take into account the operations of the Army and of the eleven ports operated by SAAM in Chile and in America, will begin its tour at the end of this year, visiting the cities of Valparaíso, San Antonio, Talcahuano, San Vicente, Iquique and Antofagasta.

Admiral Rodolfo Codina, president of the “Corporación Patrimonio Marítimo de Chile” welcomed the agreement, stating that “throughout our history and institutional experience in cultural affairs, we have developed major projects that result from the creation of alliances with the public and private sectors, as in this case with SAAM and “Museo Marítimo Nacional”, which allows us to carry out a collaborative work for the benefit of our naval and maritime culture.”

“With this alliance we want to provide a heightened visibility to the value of the sea for Chile’s development, seeking to enable the community to appreciate the wealth of our heritage in this area and the great influence that the sea has in our everyday life. The majority of the products that we have at home, in the shops and at work, arrive by sea, many through one of SAAM’s ports,” stressed Macario Valdés, Company CEO.

On the other hand, the Director of the National Maritime Museum, Rear Admiral Cristián del Real, emphasized that the agreement “will allow contributing with historical advise to the development of a very attractive project that helps to strengthen the knowledge of maritime interests and of our maritime culture, and to have the contribution of the Company in the conference of museums to be held next year, for the first time in South America.”

“Corporación Patrimonio Marítimo de Chile” will be responsible for presenting this project to the “Comité Calificador de Donaciones” (“Donations’ Assessment Committee”) stressing its cultural purpose to the “Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes” (“National Council for Culture and the Arts”), in order to have recourse to the benefits established by law for this type of initiatives, for their cultural affairs, execution and subsequent implementation.
