President Alvarado Inaugurates New Reefer Container Yard at Puerto Caldera

The terminal also added new loading equipment that will continue to improve efficiency. These enhancements, with a total investment of around US$9.5 million, are estimated to increase cargo yields by as much as 30%.

Puntarenas, October 2018. The President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, presided over a ceremony held the afternoon of Sunday, September 30th, to inaugurate a new container yard at Puerto Caldera. He was joined by senior executives, directors and partners from the company.

President Alvarado affirmed that the investments are an important step forward in port development along the Pacific Coast, and especially at Puerto Caldera. “The machinery and reefer container yards that we are inaugurating today will increase general cargo yields by up to 30%,” he remarked, while calling all parties to continue to work for Costa Rica.

The Executive President of the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports (Incop), Juan Ramón Rivera, concurred, deeming the investments “a very significant contribution from the concessionaire designed to modernize Caldera, resulting in real increases in port productivity, reduced waiting times for vessels in the bay and a competitive advantage that can be used to promote the port services we provide.”

“These advances will enable us to provide more efficient support for foreign trade in our country, projecting it into the future. This project reaffirms our commitment to continue developing Puerto Caldera,” commented the company’s CEO, Ricardo Ospina.

The container yard has 432 reefer connections, in addition to several new pieces of equipment: one Liebherr shipyard crane, two additional reach stackers to support cargo transfer and other accessories.

Puerto Caldera is the largest terminal on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast and the country’s second largest in terms of cargo handled. The main products transported include containers, bulk products, iron, fruit and vehicles.

The company is owned by SAAM, M&H Inversiones SAS Logística de Granos S.A. and Comercializadora R y S S.A.
