The terminal, operated by SAAM in the United States, has the necessary equipment to verify containers’ weight, which will help shippers meeting the requirements of reporting the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) that will be effective as from July 1, 2016.
Florida, United States, June 03, 2016.- Florida International Terminal (FIT), operated by SAAM in Port Everglades – Fort Lauderdale (Florida, U.S.A.), is ready to offer its clients a new service vis-a-vis the coming into force of the new norm regarding weighing of containers approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The new regulation, established by SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) that will come into effect on July 1, decrees it is mandatory for shippers to certify the weight of all their containers on an individual basis prior to shipment.
FIT’s General Manager, Klaus Stadthagen, said that “we have taken the necessary steps to provide this new service and, thus, help our clients to comply with the new requirements. We believe that weighing at the port terminal is the most efficient option to obtain the VGM at a lower cost and investment for shippers.”
The terminal has weighing equipment (scales) certified by the corresponding federal agencies, and plans to invest in additional weighing bridges to continue providing an efficient and high quality service to South Florida exporters.
SAAM is a Chilean multinational company present in 15 countries through its participation in port terminals, tugboats and logistics operations, generating more than 10 thousand jobs. It is the second port operator in South America with eleven ports in the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile.
