“Mirlo” and “Tordo” vessels will be transported in the BBC Emerald projects freighter and are expected to arrive in Chile by the end of next June, destined to the port of San Antonio.

Santiago de Chile, May 30, 2016. SAAM, the largest towage operator in the Americas and the fourth one worldwide, received in Viet Nam two new tugboats that will be added to the fleet of 22 vessels owned by the Company in Chile.

These are “Mirlo” and “Tordo”, azimuthal tugboats, model DAMEN ASD 2411, that are 24 meters long and 11 meters wide. They are designed to work mainly in port operations, and due to their characteristics –compact, high maneuverability and power (more than 70 tons bollard pull), they are ideal to work in terminals with space restrictions.

These vessels, built by the Dutch shipyard DAMEN Gorinchem –one of the most highly renowned towage vessel designers and constructors in the market-, will be transported from Viet Nam on board of the BBC Emerald freighter, and are expected to arrive in Valparaiso by the end of next June, to begin maneuvers in the port of San Antonio.

“These two new vessels are part of the modernization and strengthening plan for the fleet owned by SAAM in the Americas. We have selected the best designs in the market, with state-of-the-art technology that will ensure high operational effectiveness, in order to face the challenges posed by the maritime-port industry and that we hope will be appreciated by our clients”, commented Technical Manager of SAAM’s Towage Division, Pablo Cáceres.

These two vessels join the other two recently arrived in the country: “Yunco” and “Huairavo”, which were specifically outfitted to meet the requirements of GNL specialized terminals, and at the same time strengthened SAAM’s fleet in Chile, specifically in Quintero.

SAAM’s Towage Division is present in twelve countries throughout the Americas and in more than 70 ports. It has a total fleet of 188 tugboats, being established as the fourth worldwide operator and the leading one in the Americas.
