The interactive exhibition seeks to make visible both the historical and current relevance of the sea in Chilean daily life; it will remain open until November 27 in San Antonio, to subsequently visit Talcahuano and Iquique. In addition, it will have a protagonist role at Exponaval (Naval Exhibition).

San Antonio, November 14, 2016. This morning, ‘Paseo Bellamar’ in San Antonio, was filled with history and games with ‘Trotamundos’ (Globetrotter) Container, a traveling exhibition that seeks to bring the sea closer to the community. The initiative, driven by SAAM and ‘Corporación Patrimonio Marítimo’ through the Law on Cultural Donations, seeks to strengthen maritime awareness, the historical importance of developing port-cities and the perspectives this opens for the future at an economic, technological, political and cultural level.

The President of the Corporation, Admiral Rodolfo Codina, said that “through this type of projects we comply with our institutional mission. The ‘Trotamundos’ Container will make it possible to bring the general public closer and, particularly, the new generations, to the maritime culture and tradition of the place where they live, showing them that the sea has been a window connecting us with the world throughout history, that remains in the present and displays its projection into the future”.

SAAM’s CEO, Macario Valdés stated that “we want to make visible the value and influence that the sea has for the development of Chile, as well as bringing closer to the people the work done by SAAM. Over 90% of our trade is transported by sea; the sea is our gateway to the world. That is why with this container we seek to share with the community all the effort behind our industry and the hundreds of workers that make this possible. For us, this is a great way of celebrating our 55th anniversary.”

In turn, Omar Vera, Mayor of San Antonio, expressed that “this is an essential initiative to show the relevant contribution that a port-city and, in particular, San Antonio makes to the rest of the country. It is significant that SAAM and the ‘Corporación’ chose our city and that our children and adult citizens may, free of charge, learn more about this wonderful world.”

At the launching, special thanks were conveyed to the Port of San Antonio, for having provided the place to install the exhibition and receive the visitors during the coming weeks.

Details of the exhibition
‘Trotamundos’ Container has three interactive games stations, arranged in a 40-feet container and invites children and grown-ups to discover the world of navigation, maritime history and in particular, the role of ports and logistics in national and international trade, so as to value the activity and the contribution it makes.

Thus they will be able to learn the history of navigation within a timeline, discover who invented containers -through comics- the origin of tugboats and how products arrive from the most distant markets to each home, among other matters.

The ‘Trotamundos’ Container is a free activity and will be in San Antonio until Sunday, November 27, between 10:00 and 18:00 hours. Furthermore, it will have a leading role in Exponaval 2016, to be held in Valparaiso between November 29 and December 2, whose central theme is the challenges presented by the sustainability of Naval and Maritime industry.

Subsequently it will visit other port-cities such as Iquique and Talcahuano.
