The company acquired three modern pieces of equipment that will help increase the port terminal’s efficiency.

Punta Arenas, May 2018. One Liebherr 550 mobile harbor crane and two reach stackers purchased by Sociedad Portuaria de Caldera (SPC) arrived at Puerto Caldera aboard the BBC Peru to be added to its operational equipment.

The new machinery is part of recent capital expenditures totaling US$9 million, which include constructing a new yard for reefer containers, designed to help streamline operations at SPC, improve productivity and minimize vessel wait times.

“The recent acquisitions will help us boost efficiency at the terminal by giving us more and better equipment for our daily operations. This equipment will make us more competitive and improve our growth prospects,” remarked the company’s CEO, Ricardo Ospina.

Since SPC’s concession began in 2006, it has increased bulk unloading by 145% from 7,200 tons to 18,000 tons a day per vessel. Container movement has also risen 70%, from 17 to 57 containers moved per hour per ship.

The Liebherr 550 crane and two reach stackers will reinforce SPC’s existing machinery consisting of two shipyard cranes with 140-ton capacity, 11 reach stackers, 20 pieces of bulk handling equipment (grab cranes, hoppers and mega-hoppers), 20 terminal tractors and another 50 machines used for port operations.
