The new vessels will replace older barges and will help improve productivity and continue to raise environmental and safety standards at the port terminal.

Corral, May 28, 2018. This weekend two new barges for transporting wood chips arrived at Portuaria Corral. The acquisitions are part of the port terminal’s modernization plan and entailed an investment of US$ 2 million.

“The new barges will replace the current ones and will enable us to increase our port’s transfer capacity by up to 30%. They will also help us continue to raise our operating standards in environmental and safety matters,” explained the CEO of Portuaria Corral, Diego Sprenger.

The vessels, shipped today from Uruguay, are 59.4 meters long with holds measuring 8.6 x 49.6 meters and can carry about 1,100 tons of cargo.

“We will now begin trial runs and will gradually replace the nets covering the chips with lids that will allow us to transport wood chips in an airtight manner,” remarked Sprenger, who added that the new equipment will also help reduce noise during unloading and vibrations during transport.
